How to Adopt a Cat or Dog in Heartopia

Start with the Level 12 pet quest, visit Mrs. Joan in the town centre, and unlock Cat Caring before choosing an animal. This route covers cats and dogs; it does not offer an adoption route for rabbits, birds, turtles or foxes.

Before you go

Bring a Hobby Expansion Ticket and Gold, and select the first-pet quest. The route below uses January 2026 published gameplay walkthroughs and screenshots, reviewed again on October 18. We have not repeated the adoption in the current game build.

Your first adoption, step by step

  1. 1. Reach D.G. Member Level 12

    Published walkthroughs place the first-pet quest at Level 12. Finish the basic Cooking, Gardening, Fishing, Insect Catching and Bird Watching unlocks, then track the pet quest to Mrs. Joan.

  2. 2. Visit Mrs. Joan at the Adoption Center

    Go to the Pet Supplies / Adoption Center in the town centre. Follow the Cat Caring introduction. Use the quest marker to reach the shop rather than searching wildlife habitats.

  3. 3. Unlock Cat Caring

    Submit a Hobby Expansion Ticket at the hobby-unlock prompt. The captured game screen shows one ticket for this step. Complete the introductory conversation before moving to the cats.

  4. 4. Compare before choosing

    Interact with a cat to open its Pet Info Card. Check breed, gender and personality, or close the card to inspect another animal. Select Adopt only after deciding.

  5. 5. Confirm and name your pet

    Keep Gold available. The January walkthrough reports a 500 Gold exam fee; check the current confirmation amount before accepting. After naming your cat, return home and open the Pet tab on your watch.

  6. 6. Return for Dog Caring

    Complete the cat introduction, then speak to Mrs. Joan again about dogs. Follow the Dog Caring unlock prompt and review a dog’s Pet Info Card before confirming. The cat tutorial does not complete a dog adoption.

Cannot adopt? Check the blocked step

No pet quest
Check D.G. level and basic hobby unlocks, then follow the active quest objective. Finish Mrs. Joan’s introduction if the quest still points to her.
Blocked at a confirmation
Check which resource the prompt requests: the hobby ticket and the later Gold fee are separate steps.
Only cats are offered
Finish the cat introduction or tutorial and speak to Mrs. Joan again. Published walkthroughs introduce cats before dogs.
Adoption limit reached
Check Cat Caring or Dog Caring hobby rewards for the next adoption slot. Boarding capacity is a separate limit, not your total adoption allowance.
No animal you want today
Leave without confirming. Published walkthroughs describe rotating stock. Revisit after the shop refresh; no particular coat, breed or probability is guaranteed.

After your pet arrives home

Use the watch’s Pet tab to find your animal and check its needs. See the separate pet clothes, boarding and Festival bed guide for those systems and their official sources. Adoption does not establish a passive farming bonus, a fixed Bond XP table or a guaranteed Gold return.
