Pet Adoption Guide
Heartopia lets you adopt and raise companion pets that follow you around the world, unlock passive abilities, and grow stronger through daily bonding activities. This guide walks you through every adoptable pet, where to find them, the full adoption quest process, bond leveling mechanics, and practical tips for getting the most out of your furry, feathered, or shelled companion.
What Is Pet Adoption in Heartopia?
Pet adoption is one of Heartopia's core life-sim systems. Unlike decorative furniture or cosmetic outfits, pets are functional companions that provide real gameplay benefits through their special abilities. Every pet species has a unique ability tied to exploration, resource gathering, or quality-of-life improvements. The adoption process itself is designed as a series of quests that teach you how to care for your chosen animal, making the system accessible to both new and experienced players.
There are currently 6 adoptable pet types in the game, ranging from common cats and dogs available at the town shelter to rare foxes that only appear in specific zones at night. Each pet has a dedicated shelter or habitat location, a caretaker NPC, and a multi-step adoption quest chain. After adoption, pets grow through a 5-level bond system that progressively strengthens their abilities and unlocks cosmetic rewards.
The bond system encourages daily interaction: feeding your pet its favorite food, taking walks through outdoor zones, and playing mini-games all contribute bond XP. Maintaining a consistent care routine triggers bonus multipliers that significantly speed up progression. Players who invest in the pet system gain meaningful passive advantages across farming, exploration, and resource management.

How to Adopt a Pet — Step by Step
Visit the Shelter or Habitat
Travel to the pet's home location. The Willowshade Shelter in town center handles cats and dogs, while wilder pets live in specific outdoor zones. Each location has a caretaker NPC who manages adoptions.
Choose Your Pet
Speak to the caretaker NPC and browse available pets. Each pet displays its stats, favorite food, and special ability. You can interact with the pet before committing to see its idle animations and personality.
Complete the Adoption Quest
Every adoption requires a short quest chain. Common pets need 1 quest (gather food ingredients), uncommon pets need 2 quests (gather + craft an accessory), and rare pets need 3 quests (gather + craft + complete a timed challenge). Quests test whether you can care for the pet.
Pay the Adoption Fee & Bond
After completing the quest, pay the gold fee to finalize adoption. The pet joins your household immediately. You receive a starter care kit with 3 days of food and a basic pet bed furniture item.
Unlock Abilities Through Bonding
Your new pet starts at Bond Level 1. As you care for it daily — feeding, walking, and playing mini-games — the bond level increases. Each level unlocks stronger versions of the pet's special ability and new cosmetic options.
Map route hint: From the town plaza, head north past the general store to reach Willowshade Shelter. For Cloverfield Meadow, take the eastern bridge and follow the dirt path. Skyridge Aviary is above the mountain cable car station. Tidal Pools Beach is south of the harbor docks. Emberwood Forest entrance is west of the lumber mill — bring a lantern for the night walk.
Pet Bonding & Abilities Progression
Every pet progresses through 5 bond levels. Higher bond levels unlock stronger abilities, new cosmetic options, and quality-of-life perks. The table below shows what each level requires and rewards.
| Level | Requirement | Ability Upgrade | Cosmetic Perk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lv. 1 | 0 Bond XP | Base ability unlocked at half strength. Pet follows you outdoors. | Starter pet bed furniture item. |
| Lv. 2 | 100 Bond XP | Base ability at full strength. Pet responds to emote commands. | Pet collar cosmetic (3 colors). |
| Lv. 3 | 300 Bond XP | Ability gains extended range or duration. Pet can enter shops. | Pet outfit slot unlocked. |
| Lv. 4 | 600 Bond XP | Ability triggers automatically without player input. | Unique pet animation set. |
| Lv. 5 | 1,000 Bond XP | Ability reaches maximum power. Pet grants a passive stat bonus. | Exclusive pet title + golden nameplate. |
Tips for New Pet Owners
🎁
Gift Giving
Give your pet its favorite food daily for maximum bond XP. Generic food works but yields only half the bond points. Favorite food grants 20 bond XP per feeding versus 10 for generic options.
🚶
Daily Walks
Take your pet on a walk through any outdoor zone for at least 5 minutes. Walks grant 15 bond XP and trigger the pet's ability passively. Walking during favorable weather (sunny, clear) gives a 1.5x bond XP multiplier.
🎮
Mini-Games
Play the fetch, agility, or grooming mini-game at your home. Each mini-game session takes about 2 minutes and awards 10-25 bond XP depending on your score. You can play up to 3 sessions per in-game day.
⏰
Feeding Schedule
Feed your pet at the same in-game time each day to build a routine bonus. After 3 consecutive on-time feedings, you earn a "Routine Keeper" buff that doubles bond XP from the next feeding.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pets can I adopt at the same time in Heartopia?
You can adopt up to 3 pets simultaneously. However, only 1 pet can accompany you outdoors at a time. The others stay at your home and still accumulate a small amount of passive bond XP (about 5 per day) as long as they are fed. You can swap your active companion at any time from the pet menu.
Can I release or trade a pet I have already adopted?
Yes. Speak to the original caretaker NPC to release a pet. Released pets return to the adoption pool and retain their bond level if you re-adopt them later. Trading pets with other players is not currently supported, but the developers have hinted at a future pet trading system.
What happens if I forget to feed my pet for several days?
Your pet will not leave or lose health, but its bond XP gains pause after 2 missed feedings. A "Hungry" icon appears above the pet. Feed it once to remove the icon and resume normal bond XP accumulation. There is no permanent penalty for missing feedings.
How do I find the rare Fox pet in Emberwood Forest?
The Fox only appears in Emberwood Forest between 8 PM and 4 AM in-game time. Enter the forest at night and follow the glowing paw prints near the eastern stream. The Fox caretaker NPC, Fern, sits by a campfire deeper in the woods. Note that the Fox adoption quest includes a timed stealth challenge where you must approach the fox without startling it.
Do pet abilities stack if I switch between pets frequently?
No. Only your currently active companion pet's ability is in effect. Switching pets immediately deactivates the previous pet's ability and activates the new one. There is no cooldown on switching, so you can swap freely based on the situation — for example, using the Bird for weather prediction before switching to the Cat for item detection while exploring.
Is there a way to speed up bond leveling for rare pets?
Rare pets (Turtle and Fox) require the same bond XP thresholds as common pets, but their favorite foods are harder to obtain. The fastest method is to combine daily walks during sunny weather (1.5x multiplier), feed favorite food on a routine schedule (2x bonus after 3 consecutive feedings), and play all 3 mini-game sessions each day. This yields roughly 100-130 bond XP per in-game day.
Can pets help with farming, fishing, or other life skills?
Pets do not directly perform life skill actions like harvesting crops or catching fish. However, their passive abilities indirectly support these activities. The Dog's Fetch Assist can retrieve bonus foraging items, the Turtle's Stamina Shield lets you farm longer before resting, and the Cat's Item Detection highlights hidden gathering nodes in the wild.
