Unlocks: Advanced tricks. Alerts to nearby collectibles. Carries 2 items.
Tip: Complete pet-specific side quests for bonus friendship XP.

Unlocks: Unique pet skin variant. Maximum carry capacity (3 items). Special companion dialogue.
Tip: Level 10 takes roughly 30-40 days of daily feeding and interaction.
Pet Clothing & Interactions
Pet clothing unlocks at pet level 4. Each pet type has its own clothing collection — cat outfits do not work on dogs, and Oak-Oak has a separate accessory line. Clothing provides cosmetic changes only and does not affect gameplay stats.
Cat Clothing
Hats, scarves, and body outfits. Earned from events, the pet shop, and crafting. The rarest cat outfit is the “Starlight Vest” from the Meteor Shower event.
Dog Clothing
Bandanas, boots, and costumes. Festival events often include limited dog outfits. The “Rain Jacket” from the Spring Festival is a popular collectible.
Oak-Oak Accessories
Hats, backpacks, and seasonal decorations. Oak-Oak has the smallest clothing collection but gains new accessories with each major game update.
Pet Troubleshooting
Pet won't follow me
Cause: Pet is in "rest" mode or is stuck on terrain.
Fix: Open Pet Menu > tap "Call". If stuck, teleport home and back — the pet will reset to your position.
Friendship not increasing
Cause: You already gave the daily gift or used a non-favorite food.
Fix: Each pet accepts one gift per day. Check the gift icon cooldown in the Pet Menu. Only favorite foods give maximum friendship.
Can't find adopted pet
Cause: Pet is at your home plot, not following you.
Fix: Visit your home and interact with the pet bed/house to summon your pet back into follow mode.
Oak-Oak disappeared
Cause: Oak-Oak hides during certain story cutscenes and weather events.
Fix: Complete the current quest step or wait for the weather event to end. Oak-Oak will reappear automatically.
Pet clothing not showing
Cause: Clothing requires minimum pet level or the item is for a different pet type.
Fix: Check the clothing tooltip for level and pet type requirements. Cat clothes don't work on dogs and vice versa.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pets can I have at the same time in Heartopia?
You can have one cat, one dog, and Oak-Oak simultaneously. Only one pet follows you at a time in the overworld, but you can switch your active companion from the Pet Menu. All pets continue gaining rest friendship while at home.
What are the best foods for each pet type?
Cats prefer Fish Fillet (+15 friendship), dogs prefer Bone Broth (+15 friendship), and Oak-Oak prefers Acorn Cake (+15 friendship). These are the highest-yield daily gifts. If you cannot cook them yet, buy Cream, Sausage, or forage Mixed Nuts as lower-effort alternatives.
How long does it take to max out a pet?
Reaching level 10 takes approximately 30-40 days of daily feeding and play interactions. You can accelerate this by completing pet-specific side quests and using play items (ball, frisbee) which give bonus friendship XP beyond the daily gift.
Can pets help with farming or other activities?
Pets do not directly help with farming, but they provide passive benefits at higher levels. Dogs alert you to buried items. Cats occasionally catch insects. Oak-Oak highlights nearby collectibles and quest objectives. At level 7+, all pets can carry small items for you.
Is there a pet breeding system?
A breeding system has been datamined but is not yet officially available. Current expectations based on community analysis suggest breeding will allow combining traits between pets of the same type, potentially producing pets with unique color variants and personality combinations.
What is the Oak-Oak companion and is it different from regular pets?
Oak-Oak is a unique story companion that joins you during the tutorial. Unlike cats and dogs, Oak-Oak cannot be released, has its own separate friendship track, and provides gameplay assistance (quest hints, collectible alerts). Oak-Oak shares the companion slot but does not count toward your pet limit.
Can I dress up my pets?
Yes, starting at pet level 4. Pet clothing is type-specific — cat clothes only work on cats, dog clothes on dogs. Oak-Oak has a separate set of accessories. Clothing is earned from events, crafted, or purchased from the pet shop in town.
