How to Cook Autumn Stew

1

Harvest Your Autumn Vegetables

You need 1x Pumpkin, 2x Carrot, and 1x Potato. Pumpkin is Autumn-exclusive — plant seeds at the start of Autumn (they take 8 in-game days to grow, so plant by Autumn Day 8 to harvest before the season ends). Carrot and Potato both grow in Spring and Autumn in 4 and 5 in-game days respectively — plan ahead. All three are Farm crops that require watering daily. Seeds are sold at the General Store or the Traveling Merchant.

Tip: Plant Pumpkin on Autumn Day 1 and it will be ready by Day 9, giving you time for two harvests if the season is long enough. Keep a dedicated crop row for Autumn Stew vegetables.
2

Prepare the Herbs

You need 1x Herbs. Herbs are gathered from the Herb Garden next to the Healer's cottage on the west side of town — interact with any herb plant to collect 1x Herbs, which respawn every 2 in-game days. Alternatively, Herbs grow wild along field edges and forest paths — look for small green glowing plants. The Herbalist NPC also sells Herbs for 12g each if the garden is depleted.

Tip: Plant a Herb Patch in your Farm's Garden Plot (Workshop Level 1 upgrade) to grow your own Herbs on a 2-day cycle. At 12g per purchase, a Herb Patch pays for itself in around 10 uses.
3

Open the Stovetop Station

Go to your Kitchen Stovetop or the Community Cookhouse Stovetop. Interact with the stovetop, select "Recipes" → "Savory" tab, and find Autumn Stew. Add 1x Pumpkin, 2x Carrot, 1x Potato, and 1x Herbs to the ingredient slots. The ingredient panel turns green when all four are placed correctly. The Stovetop in the Community Cookhouse gives a +1 quality bonus on Tuesdays and Thursdays — schedule large batches accordingly.

Tip: Autumn Stew has the most ingredients of any base-game stovetop recipe. Prep all four vegetables the night before and store them in your Chest to avoid a scramble on cook day.
4

Simmer for 30 Minutes

Autumn Stew takes 30 real-time minutes to simmer — the longest stovetop recipe cook time. A rich orange steam animation plays throughout. At the 15-minute mark, the stir prompt appears (same mechanic as Mushroom Risotto). You have a 3-minute window. Missing the stir drops quality by 1 star. The stir timing for Autumn Stew is more impactful than other recipes — don't leave the game.

Tip: Set a real-world 14-minute timer after starting the Stew to remind yourself about the stir prompt. Missing it on a 4-star batch is painful given the 30-minute investment.
5

Serve and Check Quality

Autumn Stew comes out at 1–5 stars based on your Cooking Level (Savory specialty), ingredient freshness (same-day harvested vegetables add +quality), whether you stirred, and any Savory Boost buffs active. At Cooking Level 5 with same-day vegetables and a clean stir, Star 4 is reliable. The Autumn Stew is one of the heaviest items in inventory — it counts as 3 carry slots, so clear space before a big batch.

Tip: The "Harvest Apron" cosmetic (Harvest Festival reward) grants +8% savory quality — higher than any other cosmetic quality bonus. If you plan to farm Autumn Stew seriously, prioritize winning the Harvest Festival to unlock it.

Ingredients & Where to Find Them

Pumpkin

1x
Source: Farm crop — Autumn only, 8-day growth. Seeds from General Store (30g each).

Autumn-exclusive crop. Must be planted by Day 8 of Autumn for harvest before season end. Store harvested Pumpkins in a Chest — they keep for the whole season.

Carrot

2x
Source: Farm crop — Spring and Autumn, 4-day growth. Seeds from General Store (10g each).

Fast-growing and cheap. Two rows of Carrots planted on Autumn Day 1 yield enough for multiple Stew batches plus gifting surplus.

Potato

1x
Source: Farm crop — Spring and Autumn, 5-day growth. Seeds from General Store (15g each).

Slightly slower than Carrot but still fast. Potatoes are also used in the Potato Soup recipe, so keep a dedicated plot for surplus.

Herbs

1x
Source: Herb Garden (town west, respawns every 2 days), field edges, or Herbalist NPC (12g each)

Free from the town garden if you plan ahead. A Farm Herb Patch grows on a 2-day cycle and eliminates the need to walk to town.

Best Uses for Autumn Stew

Harvest Festival Main Dish Submission

The Harvest Festival cooking competition accepts Autumn Stew as the top main-dish entry. A Star 4 or Star 5 submission wins the Gold Ladle trophy and 600g prize — the highest payout of any festival cooking competition in the game. The festival also grants a 30% sell-price premium at the Harvest Market stall for any Autumn Stew you bring to sell during the event.

Warmth Buff — Cold Resistance in Winter

Consuming Autumn Stew grants +25 cold resistance, reducing the stamina drain from cold weather by 50% for 1 in-game day. In Winter, cold weather passively drains Stamina at 5 points per hour — the Autumn Stew buff cuts this to 2.5 points per hour, effectively doubling your effective outdoor time. Stockpile Stew at the end of Autumn to maintain the buff throughout Winter.

Grandma Rosa Loved Gift

Grandma Rosa, the elder healer NPC, has Autumn Stew as a "Loved" gift — gifting her a Star 3+ Stew gives +50 affection. Reaching Friendship Level 9 with Rosa unlocks the Master Herbalist perk, which doubles Herb yields from all gathering spots and reduces Herb-ingredient recipe failure rate to zero. Gifting her weekly Autumn Stew is the fastest path to this powerful perk.

Top-Value Autumn Dish for Market Selling

At 220–396g sell range, Autumn Stew is the highest-value Autumn-seasonal recipe per dish. With home-grown vegetables (total seed cost ~55g), the profit margin at Star 3 (308g) is approximately 253g per Stew. Cooking 3 Stews per day during Autumn generates ~760g daily profit — comparable to a mid-game Mine run with far less risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Autumn start in Heartopia?
Heartopia uses a 4-season year with each season lasting 28 in-game days. Autumn begins on Day 1 of the third season each year. The season transition is announced by a cutscene with falling leaves. You can check the current season and day on the Calendar in your farmhouse. Pumpkins planted on Autumn Day 1 are ready by Day 9, giving you up to three harvests if you replant quickly each time.
How do I grow Pumpkins for Autumn Stew?
Purchase Pumpkin Seeds from the General Store for 30g each. Till a soil plot on your farm (Hoe tool), plant the seed, and water daily. Pumpkins take 8 in-game days to mature — the longest of the three Stew vegetables. Once harvested, one Pumpkin plant is destroyed (unlike some multi-harvest crops). Replant immediately if you want a second harvest within the season. Pumpkins cannot be grown outside Autumn.
Can I substitute vegetables in Autumn Stew?
No. The recipe requires exactly 1x Pumpkin, 2x Carrot, 1x Potato, and 1x Herbs. Substituting different vegetables (like Sweet Potato or Turnip) will not match the recipe — the ingredient slots will reject them. All four specific ingredients are required. If you are short one Carrot, you must either grow more or purchase them from the Traveling Merchant (who occasionally stocks Carrots for 25g each).
How does the cold resistance buff work in Winter?
In Winter, your character loses 5 Stamina per in-game hour from cold exposure when outdoors. Eating Autumn Stew adds +25 cold resistance for 1 full in-game day (24 in-game hours), reducing the cold drain to 2.5 Stamina per hour — a 50% reduction. This effectively extends your outdoor work time from 16 effective hours to 32. Warm clothing from the Tailor also provides cold resistance and stacks additively with the Stew buff.
How does Autumn Stew compare to Honey Cake in sell value?
Autumn Stew at Star 3 (308g) beats Honey Cake at Star 3 (294g) by 14g per dish. More importantly, Autumn Stew ingredient costs are lower if you grow all vegetables yourself (~55g seed cost vs ~120g for Honey Cake ingredients). Autumn Stew profit per dish exceeds Honey Cake by roughly 70–80g at Star 3 when growing your own. The downside is Autumn Stew is seasonal — you cannot produce it year-round like Honey Cake.
How do I unlock the Autumn Stew recipe?
Autumn Stew unlocks through the "Harvest Traditions" quest given by Grandma Rosa on the first day of your second Autumn (Year 2, Autumn Day 1). She asks you to bring her 1x Pumpkin and 1x Herbs as offering items — after delivering them, she teaches you the recipe. The recipe can also be purchased from the Traveling Merchant in Year 2 Autumn for 200g if you miss Rosa's quest trigger.
