How to Cook Grilled Fish

1

Catch Fresh Fish

You need 1x Fresh Fish. Fishing is available at any body of water in Heartopia — the River south of town, the Mountain Lake, the Harbor pier, and the Hidden Beach (unlocked via Luna's friendship track). Equip your Fishing Rod and cast into the water; bite times vary from 10–30 seconds. Fresh Fish is the generic catch used in this recipe — any fish variety (Trout, Bass, Cod, or Harbor Fish) counts. Alternatively, purchase Fresh Fish from the Fish Market at the Harbor for 45g each.

Tip: Fish caught at the Harbor pier have a higher base freshness rating than inland fish. If you are targeting Star 4–5 quality Grilled Fish, fish at the Harbor or Hidden Beach for the best source ingredients.
2

Obtain Sea Salt

You need 1x Sea Salt. The Harbor Merchant sells Sea Salt for 10g each — stock up on several units per trip since it weighs little and is used in multiple recipes. Alternatively, you can craft Sea Salt at the Crafting Table by combining 3x Seawater (collected from the ocean shoreline with an Empty Bottle) into 1x Sea Salt. The craft option is slower but free if you collect Seawater during fishing trips.

Tip: The Harbor Merchant restocks daily. Sea Salt is also available as a rare drop when fishing in the Harbor area — about a 5% chance per cast. After a few fishing sessions you will accumulate a small supply without any purchases.
3

Light the Campfire

Grilled Fish is a Campfire recipe — it does not require a Kitchen oven or stovetop. Campfires are found at the Beach, the Mountain Clearing, and your Farm (you can place a Campfire Kit from the Workshop for 50g). Interact with the Campfire, select "Recipes" → "Campfire Meals" tab. Grilled Fish appears once unlocked. Add 1x Fresh Fish and 1x Sea Salt to the slots.

Tip: Campfire recipes are available from Day 1 without any Kitchen upgrades, making Grilled Fish the first cookable recipe for new players. Build a Campfire Kit on your Farm early for easy access.
4

Grill for 15 Minutes

Grilled Fish takes 15 real-time minutes at the Campfire. A flame-and-sizzle animation plays on the fish. There is no stir mechanic for Campfire recipes — just wait out the timer. You can tend the farm, go fishing again, or talk to NPCs while the fish grills. A clear completion chime sounds when it is ready. Multiple Campfires can run simultaneously if you place more than one on your farm.

Tip: Grilling during a Sunny weather day gives a passive +5% quality boost to all Campfire recipes — a minor but free bonus. Check the weather board in front of the Town Hall each morning to plan your grilling sessions.
5

Collect and Check Star Quality

The finished Grilled Fish appears in your inventory rated from 1 to 5 stars. Quality is primarily driven by the freshness of the raw fish (same-session fish score higher), your Cooking Level (Campfire specialty helps), and weather conditions. At Cooking Level 3 with a same-session caught fish on a Sunny day, Star 3 is typical. The Fishing Level also has a minor indirect impact — higher Fishing Levels produce fresher fish.

Tip: The "Angler's Gloves" item (reward from the Fishing Tournament in Summer) add +5% freshness to all caught fish. Equip them during fishing sessions to improve Grilled Fish quality without changing your cooking setup.

Best Uses for Grilled Fish

Captain Drake Gifting — Loved Gift

Grilled Fish is Captain Drake's top "Loved" gift — gifting him a Star 3+ Grilled Fish gives +50 affection, the highest single-gift bonus in his preferences. Reaching Friendship Level 7 with Drake unlocks access to the Deep Sea Fishing area and the Rare Fish Market, which sells exotic fish worth 200–400g each. Prioritize gifting Drake weekly with Grilled Fish to fast-track this unlock.

Harbor Festival Entry

The Harbor Festival in mid-Autumn includes a cooking competition specifically for seafood dishes. Grilled Fish is the most accessible entry — a Star 4 or Star 5 Grilled Fish earns the Silver Anchor trophy and 350g. The festival also operates a seafood stall where you can sell Grilled Fish at a 30% price premium during the event weekend.

Year-Round Passive Income

Unlike seasonal recipes, Grilled Fish is cookable any time of year as long as you can fish — and fishing is available year-round at multiple locations. The ingredient cost is minimal (fish caught free + 10g Sea Salt), making the profit margin very high at Star 2+ quality. Even at Star 1 (140g), selling a batch of 5 Grilled Fish per day generates 700g with minimal investment.

HP Recovery Buff

Consuming Grilled Fish restores +50 HP instantly — the highest single-food HP recovery in the base game. Use it as a quick heal during combat, after a dungeon boss, or before a long Mine run. Stack it with Berry Smoothie (+30 Stamina) for a full HP+Stamina recovery combo before any high-stakes activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fish gives the best Grilled Fish quality in Heartopia?
Harbor Fish and Deep Sea varieties produce the highest-quality Grilled Fish due to their superior freshness rating. Inland fish like River Trout and Mountain Bass are more accessible but yield slightly lower base quality. The fish variety itself does not change the recipe — all count as "Fresh Fish" — but freshness at time of use is the key variable. Fish caught and cooked the same session give the best results regardless of type.
Does fish freshness really affect Grilled Fish quality?
Yes, freshness is one of the most impactful quality factors. Fish have a freshness counter that starts at 100% when caught and drops over time. Grilling within the same in-game session keeps freshness near 100%. Storing fish overnight drops it to ~70%, and two days drops it to ~40%. A 100% fresh fish gives +1 star to the final output compared to a ~40% fresh fish. Always grill the same day you fish for best results.
Can I grill fish in the Kitchen instead of the Campfire?
Yes. The Kitchen's Cooking Station (unlocked with Home Level 1) also has a "Grill" mode that accepts the Grilled Fish recipe. Kitchen grilling takes the same 15 minutes but does not benefit from the Sunny weather bonus. However, the Kitchen's Cooking Level bonuses (including any Campfire specialty you have) still apply. Use whichever is more convenient — Campfire for outdoor batches, Kitchen grill for rain days.
How long does the Grilled Fish HP buff last?
Grilled Fish provides an instant +50 HP heal rather than a duration buff — the HP is restored the moment you consume it. There is no lingering effect over time. This makes it most useful as an emergency heal during or immediately after combat. For sustained HP regeneration over time, the "Herb Tea" recipe provides a slow +5 HP per minute for 30 minutes, which is better for dungeon exploration.
How does Grilled Fish profit compare to Honey Cake?
Honey Cake at Star 3 sells for 294g with ~120g ingredient cost = ~174g profit. Grilled Fish at Star 3 sells for 196g with ~10–55g ingredient cost (10g Salt + caught fish or 45g Fish Market fish), yielding 141–186g profit. If you fish yourself, Grilled Fish can match or exceed Honey Cake profit while taking only 15 minutes to cook versus 20. For pure volume and convenience, Grilled Fish wins.
Do I need a minimum Fishing Level to cook Grilled Fish?
No minimum Fishing Level is required. You can catch fish from Fishing Level 1 and immediately cook Grilled Fish at any Campfire. Higher Fishing Levels do improve catch rate and fish freshness, which indirectly improves final Grilled Fish quality, but the recipe itself is accessible from day one. It is one of the earliest high-value recipes available to new players.
